Holmewood House School wanted to reimagine an outdated boarding environment into a space that felt comforting, uplifting and genuinely supportive of student wellbeing. The existing dormitory no longer reflected the warmth, security or sense of belonging that modern boarding students need, so the brief centred around creating a true home away from home.

The transformation focused on balancing privacy, community and emotional comfort. Research consistently shows that boarding environments play a significant role in children’s wellbeing, confidence and social development, particularly for younger students living away from family. Spaces that feel welcoming, calm and personal can help reduce anxiety, encourage connection and create a stronger sense of routine and belonging.
At the heart of the refurbishment is a bright, open-plan kitchen and common room designed to bring students together naturally throughout the day. Filled with natural light, modern furnishings and warm, homely touches, the space encourages shared experiences, whether that’s cooking together, eating dinner as a group or simply spending time socially outside of the classroom environment. Rather than feeling institutional, the environment feels relaxed, lived-in and nurturing.
Colour played an important role throughout the design. Bright tones and carefully considered finishes were introduced to create an uplifting atmosphere while still maintaining a sense of calm and comfort. The result is energetic without feeling overstimulating, helping the environment feel both playful and safe.
The bedrooms were designed with equal attention to wellbeing and functionality. Each space gives students the privacy and personal space they need while still feeling inviting and connected to the wider boarding community. Thoughtful layouts, integrated storage and softer design details help the rooms feel comfortable and individual, supporting both rest and independence.
The completed boarding house now reflects the culture and care that Holmewood House School wanted students to experience from the moment they walk through the door. What was once tired and outdated has been transformed into a warm, modern environment that supports wellbeing, encourages community and helps students feel truly at home.
