Simplicity in Design

Action Workspace designer Kuda Kapuyanyika explains how less is more at Whispering Smith’s new London office and showroom.

When fashion designer Whispering Smith took the decision to cement their presence in London, they needed to find an adaptable and sub-divisible space that would serve as both a showroom and workspace.

“As soon as we viewed the space on St. Martin’s Lane we could see it had amazing potential in terms of what the client wanted to achieve, and the design ideas we had.”

“The brief from the client was to combine a London showroom, to house new collections, with a smart back office. But the focus was to ensure that the interior didn’t overshadow the clothes – they had to take centre stage. So we set about coming up with a concept that was distinctive but with a neutral, minimalist and simple design aesthetic.”

“With full height windows the space was bursting with natural light – perfect showroom conditions. The design followed the grain of simplicity through the use of a monochromatic palette. This design language runs through the space and we injected some warmth and visual interest into the showroom with timber panelling to frame the backlit logo and give the space its main focal point – the Brave Soul brand.”
